The following is part of a much larger dSLR Dad Holiday Gift Guide:
I’ve been searching for books to add to the dSLR Dad Media Shelf that everyone would enjoy. So, I decided to start with my own bookshelf here at home. Mastering Digital Black and White: A Photographer’s Guide to High Quality Black-and-White Imaging and Printing (Digital Process and Print) by Amadou Diallo is a fantastic book. He does a great job of leading you through the digital darkroom process of black and white photography.
First, it starts off with an entire chapter of images to get you inspired. Next, you focus on your digital darkroom. This involves not only the hardware, but also a very good chapter on color management (which is usually not as easy to explain as Diallo does). The book then continues with capturing in-camera, importing and working in Photoshop (don’t worry, you can still apply his techniques in Photoshop Elements), and finishing with the all important print. Finally, he pulls all of the techniques you’ve learned together into a series of step-by-step examples in which he leads you through the entire work flow, from start to finish. Not enough authors do this, and those that do it well should be commended.
The book also contains additional features. First, there are many interviews with different photographers on the subject of the art and process of black and white photography in the current age. The book also has a companion website and forum. There, you can download the audio version of all the interviews in the book as well as additional content found on each of the chapters.
Capturing a color photograph with the intention of black and white print, which you can hang on a wall to display to others, is not an easy feat. Amadou Diallo’s Mastering Digital Black and White: A Photographer’s Guide to High Quality Black-and-White Imaging and Printing is a resource that will show you how. Highly recommend for every dSLR Dad’s Media Shelf.
