Attention readers:
Originally, I never wanted this site to devote any space to non-dSLRs. After all, the site is called ‘dSLR’ Dad. Who wants to troll through 16 press releases on little cameras you don’t care about with sensors smaller than your pinky’s finger nail. However, I am beginning to slightly lean the other direction. We all need a pocket camera to act as our take-it-everywhere, backup camera. After all, what’s important is that you get the shot, not what you take it with. Although, any pocket cam that is discussed, must allow you the quality and flexibility to be a photographer that you have with your very own dSLR.
With that being said, I bring you the following post:
As someone who has used the Canon G5, 6, and 7, I am glad to see RAW finally return to the G-series with the just released Canon PowerShot G9 pocket camera:
After the disappointing lab results of its predecessor, the Canon PowerShot G7, we were a bit skeptical of the Canon PowerShot G9. Not anymore! In general we like what we see. We like Adaptive Noise RAW conversion. We like a compact camera that syncs with external strobes. We like full manual controls. And we like Scene Assist modes to help beginners get better with their compositions before venturing into the uncharted waters of full manual control. We love the Focus Confirm and face recognition instant playback. We like the high-quality half-camera, half-computer Panoramic capture mode. Overall, we like this camera a lot. However, we’re not so impressed with ISO 1600 image quality, nor the mostly useless low-resolution ISO 3200 mode.
You can read the full review here. Let me just add, that I’m not expecting miracles in the noise department with a sensor that is that physically small. Thankfully, it has a hotshoe for your Speedlite.

So far, I’m very happy with my upgrade to the G9 from the G7

I’m thinking about purchasing the new Canon G9, because of it’s size and capabilities.
I already have a Nikon D200, but a small camera is just better sometimes. Do you feel the Canon G9 will fit the bill?

I have just tested a Canon G9 over the Holiday break and absolutely loved it. It has solid build quality with very good controls (for a point and shoot). I decided to try and use it exclusively to take pictures of my Canon 20D with Sigma 70-200mm lens for the new website header (check out dSLR Dad.com). Was very happy with the results. My Father has the G7, but it never felt quite ‘right’ to me. The G9 feels right.
It’s solid, allows you to shoot with ease in Aperture and Shutter Priority modes, and can output a 12 MegaPixel RAW file. I think it’s the perfect second pocket camera for any dSLR Dad. If you are like me, you will notice 3-5 great photograph opportunities just driving back and forth to work during the week. With a G9 in the glove box and a tripod, now I can always grab that shot.
I liked it so much I just bought one yesterday. Happy New Year to me.
If you are going to pick one up, please head on over to dSLR Dad.com and check out the Amazon Store page. I have begun to condense Amazon’s massive site down to something useful for the dSLR Dad.
